GALLERY GACHET FACILITY PLAN

Project Description:

Hessey was engaged by Community Impact Real Estate Society (CIRES) to create a facility plan for renovation and optimal space use that would benefit Gallery Gachet’s staff, artists and community members. Initially a largely unstructured open space, the facility plan allows for flexible and dedicated spaces to serve the multi-use functions of the organization’s programming and community needs.

About Gallery Gachet

Gallery Gachet is an artist–run gallery located in a ground floor commercial space beneath the mixed-use residential Beacon Hotel in the Downtown Eastside (DTES). This artist-run gallery encompasses a range of programs that serve exhibiting artists, community arts programming and productions, and community events. Operations are run by a small number of staff, volunteers, and a volunteer board.

Project Goal

The goal of this project was to complete the pre-design phase of planning and create a facility plan to serve the future vision of the organization, community needs, and current operational objectives. As a small not-for-profit, it was important to create a plan that took usable current furniture and fixtures into consideration for reuse and to evaluate the current major building systems to ensure the space would meet functional requirements in the future.

Hessey met with the Gallery Gachet project steering committee, including community members, to develop an understanding of the current and future functional programming of the space.  Hessey created a detailed evaluation of corresponding spatial requirements.  Hessey worked with City Life Studio to create a new schematic floorplan that included new amenities such as meeting rooms, staff work areas, and designated storage.  Hessey worked with Curve Group to create a project budget.

The facility plan was used by Gallery Gachet to apply for project funding and to hire a design-build team for the subsequent phases of the project.
